Professor Evangelia Charmandari

MD, MSc, PhD, MRCP(UK), CCST(UK)
Professor of Pediatrics – Pediatric and Adolescent Endocrinology
National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Medical School
First Department of Pediatrics, ‘Aghia Sophia’ Children’s Hospital

Professor Charmandari’s research work has focused primarily on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and adrenal disorders, glucocorticoids and their molecular mechanisms of action, growth disorders and obesity. It includes research projects that pertain to Clinical Research, Translational Research, and Basic Research in Molecular Endocrinology and Cellular Biology.

Her Clinical Research studies focus on Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, Adrenal Insufficiency, Primary Aldosteronism, Cushing syndrome, growth disorders and obesity. She has also studied the effect of stress on hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in several disorders. During the last ten years, she has also studied obesity, which represents a major health problem of our century.

Her Basic science Research in Molecular Endocrinology and Cellular Biology focuses mostly on the molecular mechanisms of glucocorticoid action and in particular the molecular mechanisms underlying the syndromes of Primary Generalized Glucocorticoid Resistance (PGGR) and Primary Generalized Glucocorticoid Hypersensitivity (PGGH).

Professor Charmandari’s research work led to 349 publications (113 in SCI journals, 9 in non-SCI journals, 1 book, 56 book chapters, 170 publications in conference proceedings). Her publications have an Impact factor (IF) of 717, and received 7300 Google Scholar citations (H index = 41, i10 index = 79).

She was awarded the ‘Henning Andersen Prize’ of the European Society of Pediatric Endocrinology (basic research), as well as several prizes of the Hellenic Endocrine Society, Hellenic Society of Adolescent Medicine, Athens Medical Association and Health Business Awards.

Finally, she has been actively involved in attracting research funding, and has received a total of 2,477,000.00 € (1,688,000.00 € as PI and 789,000.00 € as co-PI). During the last 7 years she has been the Scientific Supervisor and Coordinator of the Research Programs entitled ‘Development of a National System of the Prevention and Management of Obesity in Childhood and Adolescence’, and ‘Artificial Intelligence Algorithms for Personalized Management of Obesity in Childhood and Adolescence’, which are funded by the European Union and the General Secretariat of Research and Development, Greece.
